Badagry Rep Whingan, Chimamanda, Ibukun Awosika Win at West Africa On Point Man of the Year Awards

It was a moment of pride for Badagry and indeed Nigeria as Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, clinched the Trailblazer of the Year award in the Political and Public Service category at the 2025 Man of the Year Awards organised by West Africa On Point.

The prestigious recognition placed Whingan alongside some of the nation’s most influential figures across diverse fields. In the keenly contested Political and Public Service category, he was nominated with notable leaders including Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Adeola Kafilat Ogbara, and Mr. Obi Asika, Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture.

Following an online voting process conducted on Instagram and monitored by the organisers, Whingan emerged victorious, a development that has since been celebrated by supporters across Badagry and beyond.

Other prominent Nigerians who recorded wins in various categories include globally acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, business leader Ibukun Awosika, social media activist Vincent Otse popularly known as VeryDarkMan, Arise Television journalist Rufai Oseni, music star Wizkid, and Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, among others.

Whingan’s emergence as Trailblazer of the Year is widely attributed to his performance at the National Assembly, where he is regarded as one of the youngest and most vibrant lawmakers. In just two and a half years in office, he has sponsored over 17 bills and moved several motions addressing both national concerns and constituency specific issues affecting Badagry.

Beyond legislative activities, the federal lawmaker has facilitated key projects to the Badagry Federal Constituency, attracting development initiatives and opening employment opportunities for youths. Many young people in the area have reportedly secured jobs through his interventions, while others have benefited from empowerment programmes that provided start up capital to support small businesses.

One of his standout initiatives is the Badagry 1000 Tech Training Programme, a personally driven project designed to equip youths with practical ICT skills. Close to 200 participants were trained in different areas of technology, with outstanding trainees receiving laptops to help them practise and grow their newly acquired skills.

Political observers say the award reflects not only Whingan’s legislative footprint but also his grassroots engagement and youth focused programmes, which continue to shape his reputation as a rising political figure from Badagry.

As congratulatory messages continue to pour in, many residents of the ancient coastal town describe the honour as a collective victory and a testament to what focused representation can achieve.
