A funeral service in Aleto community, Eleme, Rivers State, turned tragic on Friday, October 2, when RCCG pastor, Deacon Steve Eyo, suddenly collapsed and died while delivering a sermon on death.
The cleric was reportedly preaching on “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond,” telling mourners that death was unavoidable and could come at any time.
He reportedly likened death to going to the market, explaining that while some people leave early and others stay until late, nobody knows exactly when death will come.
Barely 15 minutes into the sermon, Eyo suddenly collapsed, with his microphone crashing to the floor.
Because he had been speaking about death moments earlier, some worshippers initially thought he was demonstrating his message. But the atmosphere quickly changed when it became obvious that the pastor was in serious distress.
Church ministers and choir members gathered around him and prayed while first aid was administered. He was later rushed to a nearby hospital in the ambulance already hired for the funeral.
At the hospital, he was pronounced dead and his remains were subsequently deposited in the mortuary.
The incident has left the Aleto community and members of the church in shock, with the pastor's final sermon taking on a deeply poignant meaning.
