Customs Boss Compensates Victim of Assault at Badagry Checkpoints, Punishes Officer as Soldier Found Culpable

The Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service at the Seme Border Command, Comptroller Wale Adenuga, has taken swift action after a Badagry resident was reportedly assaulted at one of the checkpoints along the corridor.

The case was first made public by David Sunday Aladeotan, Vice Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria in Lagos West, who shared details of the incident on social media. According to him, the confrontation happened on Thursday, November 13, 2025, after a disagreement between a road user and an officer at a checkpoint. The situation later escalated into an assault on a young man identified as Yakubu Sulaimon.

Aladeotan said that during a meeting called by the Comptroller, and attended by all involved parties, it was discovered that the assault was actually carried out by a soldier stationed at the Yard checkpoint, not by the Customs officer initially accused.

Despite this finding, Comptroller Adenuga still ordered disciplinary action against the Customs officer linked to the incident, Officer Ene. He directed that the officer be withdrawn from the checkpoint and placed on suspension. The Comptroller also requested that the identities of the soldiers involved be provided so they could be reported to their commanding officer and removed from the checkpoint.

According to Aladeotan, the Customs boss also asked for the victim's medical bills and went on to pay twice the amount as compensation, a move he described as both unexpected and admirable.

He added that the Comptroller encouraged youth leaders to continue speaking up against multiple checkpoints and any form of harassment along the Badagry route, assuring them of his commitment to professionalism and to tackling illegal activities within the border axis.
