The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government Hon Babatunde Hunpe has taken a bold step into a new phase of public service by launching a fully digital birth registration system for residents of the council area
The initiative was unveiled on Friday at the Council Chamber where Hon Hunpe described the project as a turning point in identity management and child protection in Badagry He explained that the new digital platform will ensure that every child born within the local government is captured in a secure national database from the moment of birth removing the long standing problem of unrecorded children
Hunpe said the initiative reflects the Lagos States drive toward a Greater Lagos Rising where technology is used to simplify governance and guarantee access to essential services for all citizens He encouraged parents guardians and caregivers across the twenty wards of Badagry to take advantage of the free registration stressing that proper birth documentation is the key to education healthcare social benefits and even future international travel
He thanked the National Population Commission UNICEF healthcare providers traditional birth attendants community leaders and other partners whose support continues to make community based programmes successful
The Chairman appealed for collective participation saying every child in Badagry Local Government Badagry West LCDA and Olorunda LCDA must be registered and accounted for According to him a child properly documented today becomes an adult fully empowered tomorrow
The Medical Officer of Health Dr Wale Akeredolu explained that the digital transition follows concerns raised by ALGON over birth certificate racketeering age falsification and the lack of a unified national birth database issues that make accurate planning difficult He noted that children registered through the platform will automatically receive a National Identification Number adding that the project is the result of collaboration between ALGON the National Population Commission UNICEF and NIMC
Mrs Modupe Hunga the Badagry Local Government representative for the E Birth Registration Initiative added that the first phase targets children aged zero to twelve months She commended the Chairman for providing trained enumerators registration tablets printing equipment and an enabling work environment She said the digital tools will make the process faster easier and more reliable for families across the council area
