A heartwarming story of integrity played out in Kano after a young volunteer with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nura Abdullahi, returned more than twenty million naira that a co passenger forgot in a commercial tricycle.
Nura, who volunteers at the NSCDC Zone 12 Command and reportedly had less than twenty thousand naira in his bank account, was honoured on Friday by the Zonal Commander, ACG Amos Abiodun Taiwo, who described his action as a rare show of honesty at a time when many Nigerians are struggling to survive.
According to the commander, the money belonged to one Alhaji Mustafa from Katsina State, who had mistakenly left the bag behind after alighting from the tricycle. Nura discovered the money moments later and immediately used the last dialled number on his phone to trace the owner. He had earlier lent his phone to the man, a move that eventually made it easy to reach him.
Abiodun Taiwo said it was important for the public to know that Nura is not even a permanent staff member of the corps, yet he chose to follow his conscience rather than keep the huge sum.
He explained that the command reported the incident to the Commandant General, Dr Ahmed Abubakar Audi, who ordered that Nura be celebrated as an example of integrity in the service.
The commander praised him as a good ambassador of his family, the corps and Nigeria, noting that if the story had been negative, it would have flooded social media. He said good deeds like this also deserve equal attention, especially to inspire others.
He urged Nigerians to emulate Nura’s sincerity, saying that integrity is still worth upholding no matter the economic challenges facing the country. According to him, even if Nura had taken the money, he would not have enjoyed peace of mind.
The commander assured that the young man would be rewarded for the bold and honest choice he made.
