The Executive Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, has commenced a comprehensive canal clearance and opening exercise across the council as part of efforts to tackle flooding and improve drainage in vulnerable communities.
The exercise commenced on Thursday at Ese, along the road linking Esepe, Mushin, Obele and Araromi, with the intervention focused on clearing blocked waterways and opening up canals to allow the free flow of stormwater.
The initiative follows the flooding and drainage challenges experienced in some parts of Olorunda during the recent rainy season. According to the council, the intervention is aimed at addressing the problem at its root by improving existing water channels and reducing the risk of waterlogging and flooding.
The canal clearance is also expected to remove debris and other obstructions that impede water flow, while creating better drainage pathways for excess water during periods of heavy rainfall.
The exercise forms part of the Ajose administration’s RE-SHAPE Agenda, which places emphasis on responsive governance, improved infrastructure and practical interventions that address the everyday challenges faced by residents.
The council said the clearance exercise will be extended to other communities across Olorunda LCDA that experienced flooding and drainage difficulties during the recent rainy season.
The ongoing operation is being supervised by the Vice Chairman and Supervisor for Environment, Hon. Bolaji Adele; Supervisor for Works, Hon. Jimoh Amosu; and Special Adviser on Environment, Hon. Olonde Sunday, who are coordinating the implementation across the affected areas.
The administration said it recognises that effective flood management requires regular attention to drainage infrastructure and proper maintenance of water channels.
The canal clearance exercise therefore represents another practical intervention by the council to strengthen environmental management, protect communities and improve living conditions for residents.
As the exercise continues, the Olorunda LCDA administration said it will continue to identify environmental challenges across the council and deploy interventions aimed at delivering tangible improvements to residents under the RE-SHAPE Agenda.
