Twelve members of Jehovah’s Witnesses from Anambra State lost their lives on Sunday night in a fatal accident along the Owerri–Onitsha Road, shortly after Njaba Bridge, while traveling to Agwa village in Imo State.
The crash, which happened around 9:00 p.m., involved a gas tanker belonging to NUPENG that was reportedly driving against traffic and a commuter bus carrying the church members.
According to the Imo State Police Command, the accident claimed the lives of 8 adults and 4 children, while 8 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Police spokesman, Henry Okoye, confirmed that the remains of the deceased were deposited at Ogbaku Mortuary, while the injured are being treated at Divine Hospital, Awo-Omamma.
He added that the police had cleared the wreckage and restored normal traffic flow, noting that Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Okoye also used the opportunity to caution motorists against reckless driving, stressing the importance of safety and compliance with traffic rules to prevent further tragedies.
