Residents of FESTAC Town, Lagos, have expressed satisfaction with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) over its timely and affordable waste collection services.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday, many residents noted that LAWMA’s operations have been a big improvement compared to the days when they relied on informal waste collectors, popularly known as Abokis. Unlike before, waste is now collected on fixed days—every Thursday and sometimes on Sundays—bringing an end to indiscriminate dumping and reducing environmental pollution.
Mrs. Eniola Omotola, a resident of 22 Road, said she found LAWMA’s charges more pocket-friendly. “They charge ₦1,000 monthly regardless of how much waste you generate. But the Abokis usually charge more because they can only carry limited waste,” she explained.
Another resident, Mr. Emmanuel James, praised LAWMA’s wider reach and consistency. “With the Abokis, sometimes you need them, and they won’t show up. But LAWMA is more reliable. They can handle the waste from a whole close, while Abokis can’t even cover one properly,” he said.
For Ms. Blessed-Gift Nwaruh of 3rd Avenue, the changes are obvious but there’s still room for improvement. “Our environment looks much cleaner now compared to before. LAWMA officials come earlier than they used to. But more still needs to be done so FESTAC can return to its old glory days,” she said.
Overall, residents agreed that LAWMA’s cost-effective and consistent services have made waste management in FESTAC more reliable and stress-free.
