LASU’s Prof. Tunji Azeez Becomes 11th President of SONTA

Professor Tunji Azeez, Acting Dean of the School of Creativity, Culture, and Tourism Studies at Lagos State University (LASU), has been elected the 11th President of the Society of Nigeria Theatre Artists (SONTA). His emergence was announced during the just-concluded 38th SONTA International Conference and 39th Annual General Meeting, hosted by LASU.

In his acceptance speech, Prof. Azeez promised a leadership focused on service and impact.

“With the grace of Almighty Allah, I will lead this society to greater heights. True leadership is about service and sacrifice, and that is exactly what we will do—serve and make sacrifices for a stronger SONTA,” he said.

A renowned scholar and administrator, Prof. Azeez has made notable contributions to theatre studies, cultural scholarship, and creative practice. His election is seen as a well-deserved recognition of his dedication to advancing theatre and performance studies in Nigeria, as well as his many years of service to SONTA.

LASU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni, NPOM, congratulated him on the achievement, describing it as another testament to LASU’s culture of excellence. She also expressed confidence that his tenure would not only strengthen SONTA but also bring more prestige to LASU.

We are LASU, We are Great!
