In an unprecedented bold move to deepen grassroots participation in governance, the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, has unveiled a historic initiative that places councillors at the center of community engagement across all 10 wards of the local government.
For the first time in the council’s history, each legislator has been directed to convene a Stakeholders Engagement Forum in their respective wards, creating a platform for residents to voice their concerns, share ideas, and contribute to the development agenda ahead of the 2026 fiscal year.
The announcement was made through a public statement released by the Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kriko Augustine, who emphasized that the initiative reflects Hunpe’s unwavering commitment to inclusive governance.
The engagement, scheduled to hold simultaneously on Saturday, 20th September 2025, with the theme “Participatory Engagement: A Veritable Tool for Community Development”, is expected to bring together traditional leaders, youth groups, market women, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders.
According to the schedule, the forums will take place as follows:
-
Ward A: Wharakoh Town Hall
-
Ward B: Ganho Town Hall
-
Ward C: Awhanjigoh Community Hall
-
Ward D: APC Hall, Sowhe, Ahovikoh
-
Ward E: Ajara-Vetho Town Hall (Back of Nigerian French Language Village)
-
Ward F: Ajara-Topa Town Hall
-
Ward G: Ajido Town Hall
-
Ward H: Under Tree, Ajara-Isalu
-
Ward I: Ikoga Town Hall
-
Ward J: Topo Big Town Hall
Residents are urged to attend and actively participate in the discussions, which are expected to shape policy priorities and community projects for the coming year.
With this unprecedented step, the Hunpe-led administration is setting a new standard for inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability in local governance—making Badagry a model for participatory democracy at the grassroots level.
Nice one, it's now time to see how the councillors play their role and be heard, councillors are supposed to know how many houses and citizens are in their wards to be able to reach out to every individual in them so that the dividend of democracy can be achieved.
