Badagry was thrown into mourning on Monday morning after a tragic road accident at the busy Badagry Roundabout along the Badagry–Seme Expressway claimed the lives of three persons.
The fatal crash, which occurred in the early hours of February 23, 2026, involved a truck and a commercial motorcycle carrying two passengers. Among those feared dead is a traffic officer who was reportedly on duty at the time of the incident.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the truck was descending toward Seme when it allegedly suffered brake failure. According to their accounts, the driver repeatedly honked and gestured frantically to warn other road users as the vehicle gathered speed.
In what appeared to be a desperate attempt to avert a greater disaster, the driver reportedly rammed into the roundabout’s garden fence to slow the truck down. However, the effort proved futile as the out-of-control vehicle ploughed into the motorcycle and struck the traffic officer stationed at the roundabout.
The officer, the motorcycle rider and his passenger were feared dead on the spot, leaving bystanders in shock and panic.
Emergency responders and security officials quickly moved to the scene to manage traffic and clear the wreckage, as motorists struggled with gridlock along the ever-busy expressway.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to release an official statement confirming the exact cause of the crash. Meanwhile, residents and commuters have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of vehicle safety standards, especially for heavy-duty trucks plying the corridor.
Monday’s tragedy adds to growing concerns over road safety along the Badagry–Seme Expressway, a major route linking Nigeria to neighbouring West African countries.
