The 2026 Lagos State Budget Consultative Forum for the Badagry Division has provided a platform for monarchs and community leaders to table critical demands ranging from job creation to healthcare and tourism development.
Speaking at the event, which held at the Aderemi Makanjuola Auditorium, Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, the Oniworo of Iworo-Awori Kingdom, Oba Oladele Kosoko, called on the Lagos State Government to urgently create employment opportunities for youths. He suggested bush clearing and environmental management projects along the Mile 2 axis, which, according to him, could productively engage between 500 and 1,000 people.
Oba Kosoko also appealed for the completion of the abandoned primary healthcare centre in his community, stressing that residents deserve better access to quality healthcare facilities.
In the same vein, the Aholu Agano Toniyon I of Ajara Agamethen Kingdom, Badagry, urged the government to prioritise tourism development in the division. He emphasised that beyond its popular association with the transatlantic slave trade, Badagry has a deeper, richer history that needs to be documented, promoted, and preserved to attract global recognition and investment.
The Chairman of Ojo Local Council, Hon. Muhibat Rufai-Adeyemi, also raised the issue of perennial flooding in communities like Iragbota, calling for urgent intervention in canal clearing and fortification works. She further appealed for improved transportation and traffic management systems to ease movement within the council.
Earlier in his presentation, Lagos State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George, noted that the state must continue to invest in safe and inclusive spaces, especially in light of Lagos being ranked the 14th best city in the world and second in Africa for nightlife by Time Out magazine. He added that sustaining such recognition requires deliberate investment in safety, inclusivity, and regulation, particularly as Lagos competes with cities like Cape Town and Marrakech.
The Budget Consultative Forum, which commenced on September 9 in the Ikeja Division, concluded with the Badagry session on September 16, bringing together stakeholders from across the IBILE divisions—Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos Island, and Epe.
