The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, has appointed renowned historian and tourism expert, Dr. Babatunde Olaide-Mesewaku, as Chairman of the newly inaugurated Tourism Steering Committee. Chief Mesewaku was a retired Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture.
Also appointed were Mr. Babatunde Ajose as Secretary and Mr. Afeniforo Olumide, Head of Tourism, as Coordinating Secretary. Other members of the committee include Mr. Ashamu Fadipe, Prince Yomi Semedeton Ajose, Hon. Samson Nunayon Prince Apata, Mrs. Juliana Olabisi Onala, representatives of the Mobee and Seriki Abass families, as well as representatives of the Anglican and Methodist churches.
The appointments were formally announced on Friday during the committee’s inauguration at the Council Secretariat in Ajara, Badagry.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Kriko Augustine, Hunpe said the move underscores his administration’s resolve to reposition Badagry as a leading tourism destination.
He stressed the need for a unified calendar of events that would highlight Badagry’s unique cultural and historical heritage, while also driving economic growth, job creation, and community development.
“Tourism is not just about cultural displays; it is a tool for economic empowerment. Our administration is committed to providing the right infrastructure and enabling environment to attract visitors, investors, and researchers,” Hunpe said.
The chairman noted that ongoing infrastructure projects—including road construction, urban renewal, and improvements to public utilities—are all part of a deliberate strategy to make Badagry more accessible, attractive, and economically vibrant.
Speaking on behalf of the committee, Dr. Mesewaku commended Hunpe’s vision and promised that the team would work with dedication and creativity to deliver on its mandate.
Hunpe expressed confidence that the committee’s work would harmonize efforts and foster innovation in the sector. “With structured partnerships and forward-looking policies, Badagry can transform from a symbolic heritage site into a modern tourism hub,” he said.
