A major road crash on Thursday threw commuters into panic at the Berger Bridge T-Junction in Epe, Lagos State, leaving many people injured and traffic at a standstill for several hours.
The accident occurred when a truck, said to have suffered a brake failure, lost control and rammed into vehicles waiting at the busy junction. At least four cars and a tricycle (popularly called keke napep) were badly damaged in the collision.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic. One of them, Mr. Ademola, said:
“The driver kept shouting that his brake had failed. Before we knew it, the truck had already crashed into the tricycle and several cars. People were screaming and running everywhere.”
Another commuter, Mrs. Kehinde, who witnessed the crash, called it horrifying:
“The tricycle was badly crushed, and several people were injured. Thank God no life was lost.”
Emergency officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and local security outfits swiftly moved to the scene, rescuing victims and working to ease the gridlock.
Authorities confirmed that no deaths were recorded, but several victims sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment.
The accident, however, caused hours of traffic congestion along the junction, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.
