The National Population Commission has reportedly suspended Mrs Hope Omono Enenmoh, the officer in charge of birth and death registration in Badagry, Lagos State, following allegations of extortion and petitions from residents and concerned stakeholders, report by News Peddlers detailed.

According to the report, the suspension is said to have followed an undercover investigation published in September 2026 by News Peddlers, a platform published by journalist Manoah Kikekon, which raised allegations of extortion and irregularities at the Badagry office of the commission.

Kikekon, according to the report, went undercover to investigate complaints concerning payments allegedly demanded from residents for birth and death registration services.

The investigation alleged that residents were being charged for services they believed should be provided free of charge and that the alleged charges had placed financial pressure on some families.

The report further claimed that the situation had affected some children whose parents were reportedly unable to afford the charges required to obtain the relevant documentation for school enrolment.

Following the publication, Kikekon said he was contacted by the Department of State Services to establish the authenticity of the information contained in his investigation.

He said he provided additional evidence to support the allegations and disclosed that he had retained further materials that were not included in the published report.

The publisher also alleged that he received several calls which he considered threatening after the publication.

According to him, one of the callers, identified as Ibrahim Sewanu Josugbo, allegedly claimed that the report had contributed to the suspension of an ad-hoc staff member attached to Enenmoh and threatened to deal with him if her name was not removed from the report.

Kikekon said he refused to withdraw the report, insisting that he had evidence supporting the allegations.

The matter also reportedly attracted the attention of traditional stakeholders in Badagry.

An unnamed chief, according to the News Peddlers report, alleged that Enenmoh had previously been summoned to the Akran Palace over complaints concerning alleged extortion at the NPC office.

The chief reportedly said the traditional institution had considered summoning Enenmoh before all the chiefs but later constituted a committee to address the matter.

The source, however, alleged that the complaints persisted despite the intervention.

Meanwhile, concerned stakeholders and residents of Badagry reportedly petitioned the Lagos State Director of the National Population Commission, Mr Odiagbe John O., over the alleged activities at the Badagry office.

The petition, dated September 27, 2026, reportedly called on the commission to investigate the activities at the office, ensure that NPC services designated as free remain free to residents, protect the integrity of the commission and restore public confidence.

The development has also reportedly triggered wider scrutiny of personnel at the Badagry office, with sources claiming that some members of staff were summoned for questioning as part of efforts to establish what transpired.

There are also allegations that some staff members could be victimised over claims that they may have assisted the undercover investigation.

However, Badagry Today could not independently verify claims that any staff member is being targeted or that disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against other workers.

Similarly, the reported suspension of Enenmoh remains unconfirmed by the commission as of the time of filing this report.

The allegations against Enenmoh are also yet to be established by a competent authority, and the reported suspension, if confirmed, would not in itself constitute a finding of guilt.

Badagry Today will continue to monitor the development and report any official confirmation from the National Population Commission concerning the reported suspension and the outcome of its investigation.
