Lagos State has recorded the death of its fifth elected local government official since the inauguration of the current councils in July 2025, following the passing of Hon. Habib Adekunle Anifowoshe, Majority Leader of the Igbogbo-Bayeku LCDA Legislative Council.
Anifowoshe’s death was announced in a condolence message issued by the Somolu 10th Legislative Council, which described his demise as a painful loss to the legislative community, his constituents, colleagues and the entire local government family in Lagos State.
The Somolu Council Leader, Rt. Hon. Tunde James Oyeyiola, described the late Anifowoshe as a committed legislator and public servant whose contributions to legislative representation and community development would be remembered.
His death has also drawn attention to the loss of four other elected local government officials who died within months of their inauguration on July 27, 2025.
The first was Oluwakemi Rufai, Councillor representing Ward C in Ibeju-Lekki, who died on August 13, 2025, just 17 days after her inauguration, reportedly following a brief illness.
Five days later, on August 18, Zainab Shotayo, Councillor representing Ward C and Chief Whip of the Odiolowo-Ojuwoye LCDA Legislative Council, also died after a brief illness. She had served for only 22 days.
The state recorded another loss on September 20, 2025, when Princess Oluremi Nutayi Ajose, Vice Chairman of Badagry West LCDA, died 55 days after her inauguration.
A day later, Basirat Oluwakemi Mayabikan, Councillor representing Ward F in Shomolu, died on September 21, 2025, barely two months after assuming office.
With Anifowoshe’s death, five elected local government officials inaugurated across Lagos State in July 2025 have now died within about 14 months, with the first four being women.
The Somolu 10th Legislative Council prayed for Allah to forgive Anifowoshe’s shortcomings, grant him Al Jannah Firdaus and give his family, colleagues and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
His death adds another painful chapter to the growing list of elected local government officials who have died since the inauguration of the councils last year.
