The Sokoto State Government has strengthened its support for the ongoing construction of the 1,068-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry Highway with the donation of 10 Hilux vans to the Federal Government, a move aimed at boosting logistics and security operations on one of Nigeria's most ambitious road infrastructure projects.
The vehicles were officially handed over on Wednesday in Sokoto, where the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, received them on behalf of the Federal Government.
Governor Ahmad Aliyu said the donation fulfilled his administration's commitment to support the landmark highway project, describing it as a critical national asset that will improve connectivity, stimulate economic growth and strengthen trade across the country.
According to the governor, the highway will not only connect states more efficiently but also unlock investment opportunities, promote commerce and improve the movement of people and goods nationwide.
Receiving the vehicles, Minister Goronyo described the Sokoto-Badagry Highway as one of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's signature legacy projects under the Renewed Hope Agenda, designed to accelerate socio-economic development through improved infrastructure.
He explained that the Hilux vans would play a vital role in enhancing security surveillance and supporting operational logistics at various construction sites, while commending the Sokoto State Government for its continued commitment to the successful delivery of the project.
Providing an update on the project, the Federal Controller of Works in Sokoto State, Kassimu Maigwandu, disclosed that the Sokoto section spans 120 kilometres and will feature a six-lane concrete carriageway, bridges, solar-powered streetlights and an integrated railway line.
He added that the highway will also be equipped with CCTV cameras, health posts, security stations and other emergency response facilities to improve safety and ensure efficient management of the transport corridor.
Maigwandu revealed that construction is progressing simultaneously at six locations under adequate security arrangements, noting that the project extends beyond road construction to creating opportunities for agriculture, tourism, education, healthcare and broader economic development.
The latest donation comes shortly after Governor Aliyu approved the distribution of 62 armoured vehicles, 300 motorcycles and other security equipment worth ₦27 billion to security agencies as part of efforts to tackle banditry and strengthen security across Sokoto State.
The 1,068-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry Highway was inaugurated on October 24, 2024, in Illela Local Government Area. The strategic corridor remains one of the Federal Government's flagship infrastructure projects under President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, with the objective of transforming transportation, boosting commerce and driving socio-economic growth across Nigeria.
