A top commander of the Islamic State terrorist group, identified as Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, has reportedly been killed during a joint military operation carried out by American and Nigerian forces in Nigeria.
The development was announced by United States President Donald Trump in a statement shared on his Truth Social platform on Friday night.
According to Trump, al-Minuki was regarded as the second in command of the Islamic State globally and one of the world’s most active terrorists before he was eliminated in the coordinated operation.
The US President disclosed that the mission was personally authorized by him and executed through a carefully planned collaboration between American troops and the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“Tonight, at my direction, brave American forces and the Armed Forces of Nigeria flawlessly executed a meticulously planned and very complex mission to eliminate the most active terrorist in the world from the battlefield. Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, second in command of ISIS…” Trump stated.
Trump further declared that the killing of al-Minuki has significantly weakened the global operations of the Islamic State group.
“He will no longer terrorize the people of Africa, or help plan operations to target Americans,” the US President added.
He also praised the Nigerian government and military authorities for their cooperation and partnership during the operation, describing the mission as a major success in the international fight against terrorism.
Security analysts believe the operation could mark a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to dismantle extremist networks operating across parts of Africa, particularly within the Sahel and West African region where terrorist activities have continued to pose serious security threats.
As of the time of filing this report, Nigerian defence authorities are yet to release an official statement providing further details on the operation or the exact location where the mission was carried out.
