The All Progressives Congress, APC, has suspended the primary elections for Badagry Constituencies I and II ahead of the Lagos State House of Assembly elections following complaints and logistical issues surrounding the exercise.

The development was confirmed on Wednesday by Gafar Meyon, the APC Chairman in Badagry Local Government, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

According to Meyon, party members and aspirants had waited for several hours for electoral materials and officials expected to conduct the primaries, but they never arrived.

He explained that the delay was linked to complaints raised during Saturday’s primary election, where some aspirants allegedly accused certain electoral officials of having close ties with one of the contestants.

Meyon said the party leadership later decided to reshuffle the officials to ensure fairness and credibility in the process.

“During Saturday’s primary, there were complaints that some election officials were friends of one of the aspirants,” he said.

“Then it was suggested that they should change them against today’s primary.

“So, those staff were sent to Surulere to conduct the election while those in Surulere were expected to come and conduct primary in Badagry.”

He added that despite waiting for hours, the replacement officials and election materials did not arrive in Badagry, forcing the local party leadership to escalate the matter to the Lagos APC leadership.

According to him, after briefing the state chairman of the party, Cornelius Ojelabi, a directive was issued to immediately suspend the primaries until a new date is announced.

“After waiting for several hours, we contacted the Lagos APC Chairman to brief him on the situation. He then ordered that the election be suspended until a later date,” Meyon stated.

He further disclosed that all aspirants had been informed about the suspension and supporters were directed to vacate the wards peacefully pending further directives from the party leadership.

The suspension has created uncertainty among party faithful and supporters across Badagry as stakeholders await fresh guidelines from the Lagos APC on when the exercise will be rescheduled.
