The ancient town of Badagry came alive on Thursday as traditional rites marking the final passage of the Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, officially commenced with colourful cultural displays, ceremonial gun salutes and interfaith prayers.

The solemn but culturally rich activities began across the eight traditional quarters of Badagry, where ceremonial gun salutes echoed through the communities to signal the formal commencement of the rites for the late monarch.

One of the key traditional observances took place at the revered Ogu Toplisen shrine, drawing residents and palace chiefs who gathered to witness the symbolic ceremonies rooted in the history and customs of the ancient kingdom.

At the palace of the late Akran, religious leaders from the Christian, Islamic and traditional faiths later converged for interfaith prayers, offering supplications and reflections in honour of the departed monarch. The gathering reflected the long-standing religious harmony and peaceful coexistence for which Badagry is known.

The event also featured performances by the renowned Ajogan royal dancers, whose rhythmic steps, coordinated movements and colourful display added cultural splendour to the occasion and captivated guests at the palace grounds.

Several dignitaries attended the ceremony, including members of the royal family, white-cap chiefs, traditional rulers, community leaders and government officials. Among those present was the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe.

Cultural troupes from different communities also entertained guests with traditional performances and songs rendered in the Ogu language, further showcasing the rich heritage and identity of the people of Badagry.

Activities for the final rites are expected to continue in the coming days as the kingdom pays its last respects to the late monarch, whose reign remains significant in the history and cultural preservation of Badagry Kingdom.
