A grassroots political mobilization effort has begun to gather momentum in Badagry as a community volunteer, Mr. Awhanbe Jesuyon Sunday, has taken it upon himself to assist rural dwellers with free Permanent Voter Card pre-registration and transfer services ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The initiative, which kicked off last week across the Ikoga zones, is aimed at helping residents who face difficulties accessing voter registration services due to poor internet connectivity or the long distances to the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Mr. Sunday said the exercise is his personal contribution to strengthening democratic participation in Badagry while supporting the anticipated reelection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Hon. Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, the member representing Badagry Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
According to him, the exercise is entirely self-funded, as he is using his personal resources, time and energy to visit rural communities where many residents struggle to complete the online pre-registration process required for voter enrollment.
Moving from one settlement to another within the Ikoga Ward, Mr. Sunday assists residents to complete the digital pre-registration and guides those who need to transfer their voter cards to new polling units closer to their homes.
He explained that many villagers are willing to participate in elections but are often discouraged by the stress of traveling several kilometers to access registration centers or the lack of internet facilities.
Speaking on the exercise, he urged eligible voters across Badagry to take advantage of the opportunity to regularize their voter status ahead of the next general elections.
“I want to use this period to encourage people across all wards in Badagry to go out and register for their Permanent Voter Cards or transfer their existing cards to their current polling units,” he said. “Every vote counts, and this is the time to ensure our community is fully represented.”
Residents in Ikoga Ward have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will make it easier for many rural dwellers to participate in the electoral process.
Observers say the grassroots campaign reflects the growing political mobilization in Badagry as supporters begin early preparations for the 2027 elections, with efforts focused on increasing voter registration and turnout across communities in the federal constituency.
