The outgoing Force Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Benjamin Hundeyin, has formally announced the appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon Placid as the new spokesperson of the Force.

The appointment, approved by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, marks a new chapter in the leadership of the Police Public Relations Department at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement released on Sunday by Hundeyin, DCP Placid brings to the role decades of policing experience spanning administration, operations, intelligence, training and international peacekeeping assignments.

Born on December 2, 1970 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Placid hails from Mbiokporo Nsit in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Regional Planning from the University of Uyo and a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the University of Jos. He also studied Law at the National Open University of Nigeria.

Placid joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police at the Police Academy in Kano in 1996 and was commissioned in August 1998. Over the years, he has undergone several professional and international trainings, including the United Nations Peace Operations Specialised Training programme, where he earned certifications in police studies, military studies, gender awareness, international humanitarian law, human rights and civilian protection.

His career has seen him occupy several strategic positions both within and outside Nigeria. He previously served as Police Public Relations Officer in Adamawa State and at the Police Staff College in Jos. He also worked with international missions as Chief of Training for the African Union Mission in Sudan and Head of Training and Development with the United Nations Mission in Darfur.

Within Nigeria, he has served as Divisional Police Officer in several locations including Federal Housing Calabar, Bakassi, Uruan and Gembu, and as Officer-in-Charge of the Anti-Robbery Unit in Kaduna State. His other roles include Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations in Akwa Ibom and Kogi States, Assistant Commissioner of Police in the Intelligence Department in Abia State, and Deputy in charge of Administration and Finance at Zone 3 Headquarters in Yola.

DCP Placid is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and also serves as a Commonwealth Human Rights Trainer and an International Humanitarian Law trainer with the International Committee of the Red Cross.

He is a graduate of the Senior Executive Course 47 of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies in Kuru, Plateau State, where he was inducted as a Member of the National Institute in December 2025 before his redeployment to Cross River State.

Married with children, the new police spokesperson is known among colleagues as a people-oriented officer. In his spare time, he enjoys listening to music and playing football, basketball, table tennis and badminton.

Hundeyin, who announced the development on behalf of the Force leadership, expressed confidence that the new spokesperson would bring professionalism and experience to the role as the Nigeria Police continues efforts to strengthen public communication and engagement.
