A group under the banner of Lagos State Prominent Indigenes has called on the All Progressives Congress to zone the 2027 governorship ticket of Lagos State to qualified indigenes, citing the need for fairness, justice and inclusivity in the state’s political structure.
The demand was made during a technical committee meeting held on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, where the group also resolved to throw its weight behind the re-election bid of Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by its convener, Adesunbo Onitiri, the group stressed that beyond the governorship, the positions of Deputy Governor and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly should equally be reserved for indigenes of the state in 2027.
According to the communiqué, the position was anchored on the need to promote equity, preserve indigenous identity and strengthen stakeholder alignment in the governance of Lagos.
The group outlined strict criteria for aspirants seeking to benefit from the proposed zoning arrangement. It stated that such individuals must be bona fide indigenes of Lagos State with verifiable ancestral roots, possess sound academic and professional qualifications, and have demonstrable experience in governance, leadership or enterprise.
It further insisted that aspirants must have a proven record of integrity, free from corruption or criminal infractions, while also exhibiting discipline, strong character and exemplary conduct.
The communiqué added that prospective candidates must show verifiable achievements within and beyond Lagos State, demonstrate commitment to family values and societal responsibility, and possess the ability to combine independent thinking with collaborative leadership focused on transformation and humility.
The group concluded that it would engage constructively with all qualified aspirants in the coming months, with the aim of identifying and supporting candidates best suited to drive the future of Lagos State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
