The Executive Chairman of Olorunda Local Council Development Area, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, has stepped up efforts to improve the council’s internally generated revenue, holding a strategic meeting with market leaders to strengthen collaboration and drive grassroots development.

The engagement, which took place on March 25, 2026, at the council chamber in Iworo, brought together key stakeholders including the Iyaloja, Babaloja and other market executives. The meeting was facilitated by the Special Adviser to the Chairman on Market Matters, Mr. Gbedeji Yemaren Victor.

Represented by the Secretary to the Local Council, Mr. Wahab Ashade, the chairman urged traders and market leaders to remain consistent in the payment of dues, describing compliance as essential to the council’s ability to deliver meaningful projects.

He assured stakeholders that his administration remains committed to inclusive development across all communities, noting that improved revenue would translate into better infrastructure, enhanced market safety and empowerment initiatives for traders.

In his remarks, Mr. Gbedeji Victor stressed the importance of shared responsibility, saying the council would continue to protect the interests of traders while expecting them to fulfill their civic obligations. He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the welfare of market men and women.

Also speaking, the Supervisor for Revenue, Mr. Lukeman Adele, urged market leaders to act as a bridge between the council and traders to improve compliance. He disclosed that the council is considering additional revenue sources, including modest levies on POS operators and betting outlets within the area.

On infrastructure, the Supervisor for Works, Mr. Jimoh Nuatin Amosu, assured participants of the council’s readiness to address pressing needs in the markets, promising prompt response to repairs and related concerns.

Addressing environmental issues, the Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Sunday Olonde Jonathon, warned against poor sanitation practices, reiterating the administration’s zero tolerance for filth. He also announced the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise by the Lagos State Government, set to commence on April 25, and urged strict compliance.

The Supervisor for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Kuburat Okunade, called for stronger collaboration, emphasizing that synergy between the council and market stakeholders is key to achieving sustainable development and improving traders’ welfare.

Responding on behalf of the market leaders, the Iyaloja General of Olorunda, Chief Mrs. Abosede Dada Jigbenu, acknowledged the existing relationship between traders and the government but raised concerns over what she described as limited benefits despite consistent revenue contributions.

She highlighted unmet needs such as the provision of a market bus and called for improved welfare and recognition for market leadership.

Similarly, the Babaloja General, Alhaji Chief Nurudeen Ashade, raised concerns over alleged encroachment by transport union operators, accusing them of collecting levies and allocating market spaces without remitting proceeds to the council. He urged the government to clearly define roles and address the situation to prevent revenue leakages.

Despite the concerns raised, market leaders reaffirmed their willingness to work with the Ajose-led administration, expressing optimism that the renewed engagement would usher in a more transparent, inclusive and development-focused partnership in Olorunda.
