The Joint Task Force of Olorunda Local Council Development Area, Badagry, Lagos State on Tuesday paraded suspected power cable and provision thieves before the Executive Chairman, Hon. Ajose Peter Kumayon, during an unscheduled visit to the security outfit’s office at the council secretariat.
The suspects were presented to the chairman as part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on criminal activities and safeguard public infrastructure across the council area.
Commending the JTF for its vigilance and dedication, Hon. Kumayon praised the operatives for complementing the work of conventional security agencies. He assured them of the council’s unwavering support in protecting lives and property in Olorunda.
According to him, the activities of the Joint Task Force have greatly improved security surveillance within the LCDA. He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to provide the necessary logistics and moral backing to ensure residents live without fear.
Among those paraded was one Agemo Anu from Iworo, who was apprehended over alleged cable theft. The suspect reportedly confessed before the chairman that he stole electric cables from the Epe axis of the council. During his arrest, he allegedly attempted to stab one of the officers with a knife, although no injury was recorded. The knife said to have been used in the attack was displayed, alongside some of the recovered cables.
Another suspect identified simply as Mallam was also arrested in connection with the alleged cable theft. He was described as a regular buyer of stolen cables from the prime suspect.
In a separate operation, the JTF arrested Kassim Bolaji over alleged possession of a large cache of stolen provisions and electrical appliances.
Speaking on the development, the Commander of Operations of the Olorunda Joint Task Force, Lateef Adeshina, disclosed that Bolaji was apprehended following credible intelligence from whistleblowers. Acting on the tip off, operatives stormed the suspect’s residence where stolen goods were allegedly being stored.
Recovered items included large quantities of beverages, biscuits, soaps and other provision items, as well as home appliances and laptops. Some of the goods were said to have expired. The suspect was reportedly arrested while the items were being loaded into a hired truck. The residence has since been sealed, with additional suspected stolen goods still inside.
Adeshina stated that all suspects would be transferred to the appropriate authorities in Lagos and subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
Reiterating his administration’s zero tolerance for crime, Hon. Kumayon warned that anyone caught vandalising public infrastructure or engaging in theft within Olorunda LCDA would face the full weight of the law. He also appealed to residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to rid the area of criminal elements.
