Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday explained why the long desired Central Palace project for Badagry was not executed during the lifetime of the late Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

The governor gave the explanation during his condolence visit to the palace of the late monarch in Badagry, where he also attended the 9th Day prayers held in honour of the revered traditional ruler, who passed on nine days ago.

Governor Sanwo-Olu was received by traditional rulers, political leaders and stakeholders of the ancient town, led by the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon Babatunde Hunpe.

In his welcome address, Hunpe made a passionate appeal to the state government for the construction of a Central Palace for Badagry, a project he described as exceptionally dear to the heart of the late Akran. He also appealed for the completion of the road linking Badagry Market to Ajido.

According to Hunpe, the late monarch envisioned the Central Palace as a unifying rallying point and a dignified space where traditional chiefs and elders could jointly administer peace, promote harmony and drive development across Badagry Kingdom. He noted that the monarch believed a befitting palace would strengthen the traditional institution and further entrench peace in the area.

He added that actualising the project would not only immortalise the legacy of the late Akran but also serve as a lasting tribute to his lifelong commitment to the unity and advancement of Badagry, Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.

Responding, Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the Central Palace project was stalled during the lifetime of the late monarch due to disputes over the land earlier provided for the construction.

He, however, gave assurances that the obstacle had now been resolved.

The governor said that with land now duly allocated for the project, the state government had already approved the budget, adding that construction would commence soon.

He thanked the council chairman for the timely reminder and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting projects that promote unity, preserve culture and foster development in Badagry.

Governor Sanwo-Olu also assured the people of Badagry that work would continue on the second phase of the road from Badagry Market to Ajido, describing it as critical to improving movement, trade and economic activities in the area.

The visit, marked by prayers and solemn reflections, highlighted the enduring legacy of the late Akran of Badagry and renewed hopes for the realisation of key development projects long cherished by the ancient kingdom.
