The only opposition member of the Labour Party in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Foluke Stella Osafile, has dumped the party for the African Democratic Congress, further reshaping the political landscape of the state legislature.
Osafile, who represents Amuwo Odofin State Constituency I, was the last remaining Labour Party lawmaker in the 40 member Assembly. Her status followed the loss of the Amuwo Odofin Constituency II seat by another LP lawmaker after the Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal upheld the victory of the All Progressives Congress candidate, Rauf Olawale Age Sulaiman.
A first time legislator, Osafile currently chairs the House Committee on Wealth Creation, a position she has held since the inauguration of the 10th Assembly. She is expected to formally announce her defection to the ADC on the floor of the House during plenary in the coming days.
Confirming the development, the lawmaker said the move was true but declined to give details on the reasons behind her decision. She also assured that her colleagues would be officially informed at plenary soon.
Osafile was elected into the Lagos Assembly in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party after defeating the APC candidate, Folorunso Olaitan Segun, by a wide margin. Her victory was later challenged by the APC at the Election Petition Tribunal, which initially ruled against her.
However, the lawmaker approached the Court of Appeal and successfully reclaimed her mandate, a decision that finally settled the legal battle and affirmed her place in the Assembly.
Her defection to the ADC marks a significant political shift, especially given her role as the only opposition voice in the House until now, and is expected to spark fresh political calculations ahead of future legislative activities in Lagos State.
