Ghanaian authorities have intensified their fight against cybercrime with the arrest of 53 Nigerian nationals in an intelligence led operation in the Greater Accra Region. The coordinated action targeted suspected cybercrime hubs linked to the notorious “yahoo yahoo” fraud network, a criminal enterprise that has caused significant financial loss, emotional trauma, and reputational damage across Africa and beyond.
According to security officials, nine of those arrested are believed to be the key organizers and operators of the cybercrime ring. The remaining 44 individuals were rescued during the operation and have been identified as possible victims of human trafficking and cybercrime exploitation, highlighting the dark and often hidden human cost of internet fraud syndicates.

The arrests followed simultaneous raids conducted by a joint security task force, which resulted in the seizure of 62 laptops, 52 mobile phones, and two pump-action guns. These items are believed to have been used in carrying out online scams, identity theft, and other cyber enabled crimes, underscoring the organized and dangerous nature of “yahoo yahoo” operations.
The Ghanaian government described the operation as part of a broader effort to safeguard the country’s cyberspace and protect its international digital reputation. Authorities stressed that cybercrime not only undermines economic security but also tarnishes the image of nations and fuels mistrust in legitimate digital commerce and communication.
Officials also issued a strong warning to foreign nationals, particularly young people, against falling for false job offers and quick money schemes often used to lure victims into cybercrime networks. The government reiterated its commitment to dismantling such criminal enterprises and called for regional cooperation to confront the growing menace of cyber fraud, which thrives on deception, exploitation, and the false promise of easy wealth.
