Troops of the Nigerian Army under the 6 Brigade and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke have recorded a major security breakthrough with the arrest of a notorious bandit leader linked to a string of kidnappings and armed robbery attacks along the Benue Taraba axis.
The arrest was carried out on December 21 during a carefully coordinated, intelligence driven operation by troops of the Forward Operating Base in Wukari at Vaase community in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
The suspect, identified as Fidelis Gayama, is described as a high value target who has been on the radar of security agencies for his alleged role in terrorising travellers and residents along the Kente Wukari Road and surrounding border communities between Benue and Taraba states.
Military sources disclosed that preliminary investigations have established strong links between the arrested suspect and a wanted armed group leader, Aka Dogo. Gayama is believed to be the ringleader of a well organised criminal network responsible for several violent crimes in the area.
Further confirmation by officers of the Nigeria Police Force at the Vaase Outpost revealed that the suspect is among individuals previously declared wanted by the Beji Police Division in Ukum Local Government Area.
The suspect is currently being held in military custody and will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for thorough investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.
Commending the troops for their professionalism, discipline and operational precision, the Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, described the arrest as a significant blow to criminal elements operating within the region.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Brigade to sustaining offensive operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and safeguarding lives and property. The Brigade Commander also urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to enhance ongoing security efforts.
The Nigerian Army has assured residents of Benue and Taraba states that it remains resolute in its mission to restore peace and ensure the safety of all law abiding citizens.
