Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has stirred controversy after accusing Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen of deliberately faking an injury to skip the Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa.
Osimhen missed Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein on Tuesday after limping off in the Super Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Rwanda last weekend. The 26-year-old subsequently returned to his Turkish club, Galatasaray, where scans reportedly confirmed an ankle ligament injury.
But Gyan isn’t convinced. Speaking to Turkish outlet habersarikirmizi, the retired forward claimed Osimhen’s injury was staged to ensure he remained fit for Galatasaray’s Champions League campaign.
“I know these tricks,” Gyan said. “Someone probably told Osimhen, ‘We paid a lot of money for you. The Champions League is around the corner. Go to Africa, play a bit, then act injured. Don’t worry, the next day you’ll be back in Türkiye.’”
The allegation has sparked debate among fans, with many questioning Gyan’s comments while others believe clubs often pressure African players to prioritize European commitments over national duty.
