A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Akure, Ondo State, has sentenced a 22-year-old man, Emmanuel Godfrey, to 18 months in prison for stealing 35 tubers of yam.
Godfrey, who had no lawyer, admitted to the crime and told the court he stole the yams because he was hungry.
According to the charge, he uprooted the yams from the farm of one Sunday Chinedu at Awogbamigbe, Oba-Ile, in Akure North Local Government Area on August 29, 2025.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) prosecuted the case, with its lawyer, T.O. Gbadebo, informing the court that the incident was reported on September 2. He also revealed that Godfrey had stolen from the same farm on two different occasions, and had previously been pardoned by the community.
The offence, Gbadebo said, contravened Sections 383(1) and (2) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
After listening to his plea, the magistrate sentenced Godfrey to 18 months in prison.
