ABUJA — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has invited the former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, to its Abuja headquarters for questioning.
A reliable source within the commission confirmed on Wednesday that Kyari was at the EFCC office and was already being engaged by investigators. “He is here with our investigators at the moment. This is all I can disclose for now,” the source said.
As at the time of filing this report, efforts to get an official statement from EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful.
Kyari, who led the NNPCL from 2019 until July 2024 when he was replaced, was a key figure in the oil sector during his tenure. He oversaw major reforms, most notably the transition of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation into a limited liability company, a move aimed at improving efficiency and transparency within the state-owned enterprise.
Although details of the EFCC’s probe remain unclear, his invitation has sparked interest given his prominent role in managing the country’s oil resources during a period marked by both reforms and controversies.
