Over 10 victims of a ghastly accident on the Benin–Auchi highway were rescued on Saturday following the swift intervention of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.
The governor, who was travelling with his convoy to Irrua in Esan Central Local Government Area, ran into a traffic gridlock shortly after the bypass and alighted to assess the situation.
According to Channels TV, upon reaching the scene, he discovered several passengers in critical condition, many bleeding profusely, while bystanders watched helplessly.
Moved by compassion, Governor Okpebholo immediately ordered his aides to deploy two of his security Hilux vehicles to evacuate the victims to a nearby medical facility.
The governor personally supervised the rescue operation, ensuring that the injured—including a woman with severe wounds—were carefully carried into the vehicles one after another for urgent medical attention.
Eyewitnesses reported that the accident occurred when the driver of a white Toyota Venza, with registration number ABUJA GWA 50 AW, drove against traffic and collided with three fully loaded commercial minibuses.
The collision left scores injured and caused a major traffic standstill.
Governor Okpebholo remained at the scene until the last victim was taken to the hospital under security escort before he continued his journey.
His swift response drew applause from residents, motorists, and sympathisers who witnessed the incident.
As of press time, neither the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) nor the state government had released an official statement on the crash.
