Badagry West LCDA Chairman Warns Against Illegal Mining in Coastal Communities

The Executive Chairman of Badagry West Local Council Development Area, Hon. Rauf Ibrahim Kayode Yemaren (RIKAY), has sounded a strong warning against illegal mining activities reportedly taking place in parts of the council’s coastal belt.

In a statement released by his office, the chairman confirmed receiving credible reports of unapproved mining operations in Falola Community and other coastal areas of Badagry West. He described the development as dangerous, criminal, and unacceptable.

“We have received information about ongoing illegal mining at Falola and other areas across our coastal communities. These activities are reckless, criminal, and destructive. Let it be known that anyone found culpable will be arrested, prosecuted, and their equipment seized. Illegal mining is an assault on our environment and our people, and it will not be tolerated,” Hon. Yemaren declared.

The chairman stressed that the unlawful activities pose grave threats to the environment and residents of the LCDA, warning that continued mining could result in coastal erosion, water pollution, loss of aquatic life, and a collapse of livelihoods for fishermen, farmers, and traders who depend on natural resources.

Hon. Yemaren assured residents that the council is working closely with security agencies, environmental regulators, and the Lagos State Government to track and clamp down on illegal operators. He also urged traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities without delay.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, the chairman pledged that only duly licensed operators who comply with environmental standards will ever be allowed to carry out mining within Badagry West.
