The Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, has intensified efforts to tackle unemployment among youths in the ancient town by strengthening collaboration with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE).
On Tuesday, Hunpe received the Lagos State Coordinator of the NDE, Mr. Rufus Gbadebo Ogungbemi, who paid him a courtesy visit at the council secretariat. The visit, which centered on opportunities in training, skills acquisition, and youth empowerment, comes in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope economic reform agenda.
Welcoming the delegation, Hunpe applauded the NDE for its contributions to grassroots development and poverty alleviation. He recalled a personal testimony within his family that underscored the life-changing impact of the agency’s programmes.
“The NDE has consistently shown commitment to empowering Nigerians through structured skill acquisition and settlement schemes. My wife was once a trainee under the NDE, and through hard work and dedication, she grew into an entrepreneur and later served as Special Adviser and Supervisor for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Badagry. That journey is proof of the transformative role of the NDE,” he said.
Speaking on the purpose of his visit, Ogungbemi congratulated Hunpe on his leadership and briefed the council on the agency’s ongoing recruitment drive under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative.
According to him, the initiative is designed to broaden access to vocational training, encourage entrepreneurship, and open direct pathways for sustainable employment across both rural and urban areas.
“Since its establishment in 1987, the NDE has been a pillar in Nigeria’s labour sector. We are not just creating jobs; we are building opportunities that make people self-reliant,” Ogungbemi stated.
He further disclosed that between four and five beneficiaries would be selected from each of the 376 wards in Lagos State, translating to between 1,504 and 1,880 participants for the current phase of the programme.
“This initiative will equip beneficiaries with practical skills, produce a new generation of entrepreneurs, and reduce unemployment. Badagry, with its vibrant and energetic youth population, is strategically positioned to benefit immensely,” he added.
Also present at the meeting were the Vice Chairman, Hon. Akeem Adeyemi; Chief of Staff, Mr. Towolawi Taiwo; and Council Manager, Mrs. Mary Abosede Olusanya.
Hunpe pledged that his administration would continue to work closely with the NDE and other relevant agencies to ensure Badagry youths are not left behind in the Federal Government’s drive for economic renewal and empowerment.
