Lagos Begins Installation of Signposts in Badagry, Other Communities to Curb Boundary Disputes

The Lagos State Government has commenced the installation of boundary demarcation signposts in Badagry and other communities across the state as part of efforts to prevent boundary disputes, check encroachment and promote peaceful coexistence with neighbouring states.

The development was disclosed on Monday by the Lagos State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development in a statement published on its official Facebook page.

The ministry explained that the initiative was designed to ensure peaceful coexistence among neighbouring and bordering communities while preventing disputes arising from boundary encroachment.

Speaking at the commencement of the exercise, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Kikelomo Bolarinwa, said the state government was committed to ensuring that boundaries between communities and neighbouring states were clearly marked in line with the official specifications of the Office of the Surveyor-General.

According to her, the installation of the signposts represents a practical step towards enforcing officially recognised boundaries and preventing encroachment from neighbouring states.

She added that the initiative would also help ensure that residents of border communities were properly identified and captured for government welfare programmes and other development interventions.

Bolarinwa said the exercise was expected to support infrastructure provision, improve living conditions, strengthen local economies and reduce rural-urban migration across the state.

She urged residents of border communities to protect the installed signposts and refrain from acts capable of undermining the exercise or disrupting public order.

The permanent secretary warned that anyone found demolishing the signposts would face sanctions, stressing that the government would not tolerate actions capable of threatening peaceful coexistence, social order and the ease of doing business in Lagos State.

She also assured residents that the government would continue to extend the benefits of democracy to communities through the implementation of its T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda, particularly in rural areas.

According to the ministry, the initiative aligns with the state government's broader ambition of building a 21st Century Economy and achieving a Greater Lagos through strategic development interventions across communities.

The ministry listed Eredo-Epe around Mojoda, Itokin-Ijebu Ode Road, Ikorodu-Shagamu Road, Ojodu-Alagbole Road, Owode-Apa Road and the Seme border among the locations where boundary signposts had been installed.

The inclusion of Owode-Apa and the Seme border is particularly significant to Badagry, a border area where clearly defined boundaries are important for relations between neighbouring communities and the administration of public services.

The exercise is expected to provide clearer physical indications of recognised boundaries and help reduce misunderstandings over territorial limits, although its effectiveness will depend on adherence to official demarcations and cooperation among affected communities.
