A Roman Catholic priest in southwestern Ecuador has died after a heavy wooden crucifix fell on him during a livestreamed church service.
The priest, identified as Patricio Sánchez of Perpetuo Socorro Church, was confirmed dead by the Archdiocese of Guayaquil.
Footage of the evening Mass on Saturday showed the crucifix detaching from the wall above the altar and striking Sánchez on the head as he conducted the service. He did not appear to notice the falling object before it hit him.
Worshippers were heard crying for help as the livestream continued, capturing the shocking moment.
Sánchez was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic religious order founded in 1732 with a presence in 80 countries.
A Eucharistic service was held in his memory on Sunday evening, as the archdiocese expressed gratitude for the condolences and prayers received from around the world.
Local authorities have yet to issue an official comment on the incident.
