Dolapo Babatunde Tanimola

The late Dolapo Babatunde Tanimola, a man whose name was virtually unknown to the public until recently, has unexpectedly become one of the most talked-about figures in the ongoing controversy surrounding Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi and the alleged fake appointment as Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).

Tanimola, whose Yoruba name loosely translates to "Who knows tomorrow?", reportedly died in a fire incident at Kachi Hotel in Utako, Abuja, on October 22, 2025, just five days before Adeyemi was arrested by security operatives over allegations of forgery, impersonation and conspiracy.

His death has attracted renewed public attention after the Presidency disclosed that Adeyemi allegedly identified him during police interrogation as the individual who helped procure the controversial presidential appointment letter at the centre of the case.

The Presidency has consistently maintained that the PFIPC is a fictitious government agency and described Adeyemi as an impostor who allegedly forged government documents to present himself as the council's Director-General. Adeyemi, however, has denied the allegations, insisting that his appointment was genuine and that he would clear his name in court.

The revelation that Tanimola allegedly played a role in obtaining the disputed appointment letter has made him a key figure in the investigation. However, his death meant investigators never had the opportunity to question him.

According to the Presidency, after Adeyemi mentioned Tanimola during interrogation, investigators traced him only to discover that he had died days earlier in what was described as a hotel fire. Officials said the police verified his death through multiple sources, including the National Hospital where his remains were deposited, interviews with family members, the proprietor of Kachi Hotel, and records relating to his burial.

Sources familiar with the matter said Tanimola was buried after a funeral service held at Saint Matthew Anglican Church in Maitama, Abuja, on November 8, 2025.

While little is publicly known about his personal or professional life, photographs obtained by Daily Trust have added another layer of intrigue to the story.

The images reportedly show Tanimola alongside several prominent Nigerian political leaders, business moguls and senior public officials at different events before his death.

Among those seen in the photographs are former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.), billionaire businessmen Tony Elumelu, Abdulsamad Rabiu and Arthur Eze, Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, as well as former Inspectors-General of Police Mike Okiro, Solomon Arase and Kayode Egbetokun.

Although the photographs suggest that Tanimola had access to influential personalities across Nigeria's political, business and security circles, they do not establish any wrongdoing or indicate that any of those pictured had knowledge of the allegations now under investigation.

Nevertheless, the images have fueled public curiosity about his background, occupation and the nature of his relationships with powerful figures.

Questions have also emerged over the circumstances surrounding his death.

A timeline circulated alongside official documents indicates that on October 10, 2025, Adeyemi hosted foreign ambassadors at the Wells Carlton Hotel in Abuja without the involvement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Five days later, on October 15, the ministry reportedly alerted the National Security Adviser and the Chief of Staff to the President over the meeting. By October 17, the Chief of Staff had petitioned security agencies to investigate alleged forgery and impersonation linked to the case.

On October 22, Tanimola reportedly died in a fire at Kachi Hotel in Utako. Five days later, on October 27, Adeyemi was arrested, after which he allegedly identified the deceased as the person who assisted him in obtaining the disputed appointment letter.

The sequence of events has sparked widespread discussion, particularly because there appears to be no widely available independent media report of the alleged hotel fire in Abuja at the time. However, the Presidency insists the incident was verified through official investigations involving the deceased's relatives, hospital records, the hotel management and burial documentation.

Despite growing public interest, several questions remain unanswered.

The Presidency has not disclosed Tanimola's occupation, official affiliation or how he allegedly became connected to the disputed appointment letter. It also remains unclear whether investigators recovered any documentary, financial or digital evidence independently linking him to the alleged forgery before his death.

With the principal figure allegedly identified by Adeyemi no longer alive to provide his own account, attention has shifted to the ongoing court proceedings, where the allegations against Adeyemi will be tested.

For now, the mystery surrounding Dolapo Babatunde Tanimola continues to deepen, making him one of the most intriguing figures in a case that has generated nationwide attention while leaving many questions still awaiting answers.
