The 2023 governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has emerged as the African Democratic Congress flagbearer for the 2027 Lagos governorship election following a decisive victory in the party's primary election.

Rhodes-Vivour defeated his rival, Silas, in the statewide primary exercise after polling 12,948 votes against 6,183 votes secured by his opponent in what party officials described as a keenly contested election, report by Lagos Reporters says

The primary election, which took place across different parts of Lagos State, reportedly recorded a strong turnout of party members and supporters. Observers also described the exercise as peaceful, transparent and properly coordinated.

Speaking shortly after he was declared winner, Rhodes-Vivour thanked party loyalists and supporters for what he called massive support for his political movement.

“I want to sincerely thank every supporter who rallied around this movement and came out en masse to vote. This victory belongs to all of us who believe in a better future,” he said.

The ADC governorship candidate noted that the outcome of the primary marks the beginning of what he described as a renewed movement aimed at promoting accountable leadership, good governance and transformation in Lagos State ahead of the 2027 election.

“The work has only just begun. Together, we will continue to build a movement that represents hope, progress and accountable leadership for our people,” he added.

Rhodes-Vivour also dismissed earlier reports circulating on social media which claimed he had lost the primary election, describing the reports as misleading and speculative.

Reacting to the rumours in a statement issued on Monday, he said, “If only wishes were horses, if only we could sit in our house and write results on Excel sheets to win elections.”

The former governorship candidate further insisted that his political structure and support base across Lagos State remain strong despite criticism from opponents and doubters.

Quoting American comedian Dave Chappelle, Rhodes-Vivour said, “When a hero stumbles, cowards rejoice. Nothing feels better to a coward than to watch a brave guy fall.”

He also revealed that celebrations had already begun among his supporters even before the official declaration of results due to confidence in the outcome of the exercise.

“Since Friday the landslide victory was so definite that we had started celebrations. Last night we were officially declared victorious in a landslide victory,” he stated.

With the conclusion of the primary election, political observers believe the ADC candidate is expected to intensify consultations, grassroots mobilization and statewide engagements ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 Lagos governorship contest.
