A former Leader of the House in Badagry West LCDA, Hon. Mukaila Oluwafemi, popularly known as HMO, has appealed to leaders of the All Progressives Congress in Badagry Federation to adopt consensus candidates ahead of the 2027 House of Representatives and Lagos State House of Assembly elections.
In an open letter addressed to APC elders and stakeholders across Badagry Local Government, Badagry West LCDA and Olorunda LCDA, HMO stressed the need for unity and strategic political planning to preserve Badagry’s influence in Lagos State politics following the death of prominent APC leader, Baba Sunny Akinsanya Ajose.
The former council legislator, who described himself as a loyal party member and political son of the late Ajose, noted that several parts of Lagos State, including Amuwo-Odofin, Oshodi-Isolo and Surulere, had already begun endorsing consensus candidates for elective positions ahead of the next general elections.
According to him, Badagry must not lag behind at such a critical political moment.
He urged the apex leadership of the APC in the federation to agree on one consensus candidate for the House of Representatives seat and also produce consensus candidates for Lagos State House of Assembly Constituencies I and II.
HMO argued that consensus arrangements would reduce internal wrangling, ease financial pressure on aspirants and strengthen Badagry’s negotiating power within the state political structure.
He also advised party leaders to ensure that aspirants persuaded to step down for the sake of unity should be compensated with strategic appointments such as commissioner, special adviser and other relevant positions to maintain loyalty and fairness within the party.
“Past experiences have shown that not all who made sacrifices were adequately rewarded. We must improve on this and ensure fairness going forward,” he stated.
The APC chieftain further called on respected leaders across the federation, including Baba Olatunde Onisalu, Hon. Joseph Bamgbose and Baba M.Z. Ogunbiyi, to uphold the ideals and political agreements established during the lifetime of the late Baba Sunny Ajose.
According to him, Badagry urgently needs strong and united representation within the Governance Advisory Council, warning that disunity could pave the way for the imposition of candidates without grassroots support.
“Baba Sunny Ajose was our voice and symbol of leadership. We must now present a worthy successor who can sustain and elevate Badagry’s political relevance,” he said.
While acknowledging that all aspirants are qualified for the various positions, HMO maintained that leadership opportunities should be fairly distributed, noting that political offices can only be occupied by one person at a time.
As part of his recommendations, he called for an emergency meeting involving party leaders, stakeholders and aspirants to encourage dialogue and voluntary consensus ahead of the party primaries.
He also proposed the adoption of a transparent and credible internal selection process should consensus fail.
Speaking on the future political direction of Badagry, HMO urged leaders not to overlook opportunities within the Lagos State House of Assembly leadership structure, especially with possible changes expected before 2027.
He said Badagry should strategically position itself to negotiate for key offices such as Speaker or Deputy Speaker while still pursuing broader ambitions within Lagos politics.
“Badagry must rise again through unity, strategic planning and collective resolve,” he declared.
The open letter has since generated discussions within political circles in Badagry, with many party faithful viewing it as an early push for reconciliation and strategic alignment ahead of the 2027 elections.
