Representatives of the Ogu General Assembly OGA on Monday joined members of the Lagos State House of Assembly as legislative committees moved to inspect the Makoko waterfront community following the controversial demolition that has sparked widespread condemnation across the state.
The visit came after OGA’s earlier engagement with the House Committee on Ethics, which prompted the Assembly to delegate the Committee on Rules and Business to carry out an on the spot assessment of the affected area.
Dr. Mewhenu Hosu, Secretary of the Ogu General Assembly, made the disclosure in a Facebook post, explaining that OGA was formally invited to participate in the inspection. He shared images of the lawmakers travelling by water to Makoko, describing them as distinguished members of the Assembly on their way to observe developments firsthand.
According to him, the inspection was a direct outcome of OGA’s sustained advocacy over the demolition, which reportedly displaced many residents of the waterside settlement.
Makoko, largely inhabited by Ogu speaking fishermen who have lived and worked on the lagoon for generations, was recently hit by a demolition exercise allegedly carried out by the Lagos State Government, triggering outrage from community groups, civil society organisations and concerned citizens.
Dr. Hosu commended members of the Ogu General Assembly for their unity and determination, describing the body as a growing voice for the Ogu people wherever they may be found.
The outcome of the inspection is expected to shape legislative responses and possible interventions as calls intensify for the state government to address the humanitarian impact of the demolition and prevent further displacement in the historic fishing community.
