President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun from office as the Inspector General of Police, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure at the helm of the Nigeria Police Force.

Multiple presidential aides, who spoke in confidence on Tuesday, confirmed that the President asked Egbetokun to step aside during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

“Yes, Egbetokun is gone,” one of the aides said when contacted. Another source disclosed that a formal statement announcing the development was already being prepared and would be released shortly.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful as calls and messages sent to him were not returned. The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, also did not respond to inquiries.

Sources within the police hierarchy hinted that a successor may have been identified, although no official confirmation has been made. A senior officer, who requested anonymity, revealed that Tunji Disu had been contacted in connection with the position.

“He has been contacted, but we are all waiting for official confirmation, which should come later in the day,” the source said.

Egbetokun was appointed Inspector General of Police on June 19, 2023, by President Tinubu. His continued stay in office had generated controversy in 2024 after he attained the mandatory retirement age of 60 on September 4. However, his tenure was extended following an amendment to the Police Act, a move that drew mixed reactions from legal and civil society groups.

With his removal, attention has now shifted to who will take over leadership of the police force at a time of mounting security concerns across the country. An official announcement from the Presidency is expected to clarify the next line of action.
