A routine border stop at the Burdugu entry checkpoint in Baure Local Government Area of Katsina State ended in tragedy on February 3, 2026, after a Nigerien national was shot and later died from his injuries.
Sources said the incident occurred around 11am when an officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Inspector Tijjani Mai Kaho, attempted to stop a motorcycle rider for routine border screening. The rider, identified as 30 year old Dari Bace Bace from Bace Bace village in the Niger Republic, reportedly failed to halt.
In the process, the officer allegedly opened fire, hitting the motorcyclist in the head and leaving him critically injured. He was first rushed to the General Hospital in Baure before being referred to the Federal Medical Centre in Daura, where he eventually died while receiving treatment.
Following the shooting, security operatives secured the scene as authorities commenced preliminary investigations. However, the suspect officer is said to have fled and is currently at large.
The Katsina State Police Command has confirmed that a full scale investigation has been launched to unravel the circumstances surrounding the killing and ensure accountability.
Officials assured that updates would be made available as the probe progresses, amid growing concerns over the use of force at border checkpoints.
