After Badagry Today Video Exposed Filthy Heaps, Lagos Begins Massive Refuse Evacuation on Lagos–Badagry Expressway

The Lagos State Government has commenced a large-scale evacuation of heaps of refuse that had overtaken major sections of the Lagos–Badagry Expressway, following public outrage sparked by a viral video shared by Badagry Today and CityMood Magazine

The expressway, an international highway linking Nigeria to neighbouring West African countries, had in recent weeks been turned into an illegal dump site, especially around Alaba Rago, LASU axis and Okokomaiko, posing serious environmental and health risks to commuters, traders and residents.

The alarming condition of the road gained widespread attention after Badagry Today, alongside CityMood Magazine, circulated footage showing mountains of refuse littering the busy corridor, drawing strong reactions from the public.

In swift response, the Lagos State Government ordered immediate clean-up operations, leading to the deployment of heavy-duty bulk waste carriers, loaders and sanitation personnel to clear the illegal dump sites at Alaba Rago.

Official, who craved anonymity, because he was not authorized to speak on the exercise said the evacuation exercise forms part of a comprehensive environmental sanitation drive aimed at restoring cleanliness and safety along the international transport route.

Following the ongoing clearance at Alaba Rago, the clean-up will extend to adjoining areas including Okokomaiko and the median around Lagos State University, which have been identified as high-pressure zones due to heavy vehicular movement and recurring indiscriminate dumping.

In the next phase, Badagry Today learned that, the sanitation teams are expected to move from Agric Bus Stop towards Mile 2, ensuring that the entire stretch of the expressway corridor is progressively restored to a cleaner state, Badagry Today learned

Our source also revealed that beyond the current intervention, a long-term sustainability plan will be activated. This will involve continuous monitoring of the corridor, engagement with traders and residents, public sensitisation against illegal dumping, and strict enforcement of environmental laws.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a cleaner, safer and more environmentally responsible Lagos–Badagry Expressway, noting that the road is not just a community route but a vital international link for trade and movement across borders.

With the evacuation already transforming sections of the highway, residents and commuters are hopeful that the refuse crisis that once defined the corridor will soon become a thing of the past.
