After a dominant performance that saw them crush Mozambique 4-0, Nigeria’s Super Eagles are officially packing their bags. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that our boys will depart the city of Fez for Marrakesh tomorrow, Thursday, as they gear up for the AFCON quarterfinals.
Here is everything you need to know about the team’s next move and the "camp wahala" rumors making the rounds.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to take the pitch this Saturday at 5:00 PM. While their bags are packed for Marrakesh, they are currently waiting to find out who their opponent will be: either the Fennecs of Algeria or the Leopards of DR Congo. Whoever wins that battle will have to face a fired-up Nigerian squad.
If you’re wondering why the team is moving around so much, it’s because of a new rule by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This year, teams have a "home base." The Eagles’ base is in Fez. They will travel to Marrakesh for the match on Saturday, but win or lose, they have to return to Fez immediately after. If they qualify for the semi-finals, they’ll then move again to Rabat on January 14th to face either Morocco or Cameroon.
Training is in full swing, and 26 out of 27 players are fit and ready for action. The only person currently on the sidelines is defender Ryan Alebiosu, who is still working hard to recover from an injury.
Social media was buzzing after cameras caught Victor Osimhen gesturing toward Ademola Lookman during the last game, leading many to fear a rift between our two star strikers.
However, Team Administrator Dayo Achor has laughed off the rumors. "There is no problem whatsoever," he said. "What people saw was just a heat-of-the-moment thing between two brothers. It was settled within hours."
He also cleared the air regarding Jerome Akor Adams, who was rumored to have left the camp. It turns out Jerome only took a quick one-hour permission to visit his mother, who was hospitalized in Fez. He is back with the team and fully focused on Saturday’s game.
