The Nigerian Navy has recorded another major success in its ongoing fight against smuggling with the interception of 372 bags of foreign rice in Badagry, Lagos State.
The seizure was carried out by personnel of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base FOB Badagry during a routine security and anti smuggling operation along known illegal trade routes in the area. The consignment, suspected to have been brought into the country through unauthorized channels, was intercepted before it could be distributed into local markets.
Naval sources explained that the operation was part of sustained efforts to curb economic sabotage, protect local industries and enforce the Federal Government’s trade and border control policies. The officers involved were said to have acted on credible intelligence which led to the successful interception of the smuggled goods.
Following established procedures, the seized 372 bags of rice were formally handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service for further investigation and appropriate action in line with the law. Customs officials have since taken custody of the consignment as processes begin to identify those behind the illegal importation.
The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with sister security agencies to secure the nation’s waterways and border communities against smuggling, trafficking and other criminal activities. Residents of Badagry were also urged to support security efforts by providing timely information that could help prevent economic crimes and safeguard national interests.
The latest seizure underscores the Navy’s growing presence in coastal communities and its determination to clamp down on smuggling networks that undermine the economy and threaten local livelihoods.
