BADAGRY, LAGOS — A deep sense of grief has enveloped Badagry Kingdom following the passing of its revered paramount ruler, His Majesty De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry. The monarch’s death has marked the end of a significant era in the ancient coastal town, leaving subjects, traditional institutions and admirers across Lagos State and Nigeria in mourning.
The late Akran was more than a traditional ruler. For decades, he stood as the custodian of Badagry’s rich cultural heritage, a stabilising force in the kingdom and a respected voice within the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. His reign was defined by wisdom, calm authority and an uncommon ability to unite diverse interests in a town known for its historical depth and cultural pride.
Throughout his time on the throne, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I earned widespread respect beyond the palace walls. He was acknowledged across the state and the country as a monarch of intellect and dignity, whose leadership blended tradition with thoughtful engagement on contemporary issues affecting his people. His influence extended into cultural preservation, community cohesion and the promotion of Badagry’s historical significance on the national stage.
Residents of Badagry described his passing as a heavy blow, noting that the town has lost not just a king but a father figure whose counsel and presence brought reassurance in moments of uncertainty. From community elders to youths, tributes have continued to pour in, reflecting the depth of the bond between the monarch and his people.
As news of his death spread, traditional drums fell silent and a sombre mood settled over the kingdom. Flags flew at half mast in parts of the town, while discussions in markets, homes and public spaces centred on memories of a reign many described as impactful and dignified.
As Badagry bows its head in grief, the legacy of De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I remains firmly etched in history. His footprints on the sands of time, shaped by service, unity and cultural pride, are expected to endure for generations. The kingdom, while mourning, also celebrates a royal life lived in dedication to tradition, people and progress.
