The death of the Akran of Badagry, His Royal Majesty Aholu Babatunde Menu-Toyi, has been described as a monumental loss to Lagos State and Nigeria by the Member of the House of Representatives for Badagry Federal Constituency, Hon Sesi Oluwaseun Whingan, as Badagry continues to mourn the passing of one of its most revered monarchs.
Badagry has been plunged into deep mourning following the transition of the respected traditional ruler, who reportedly joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday, January 12, 2026. His passing has continued to draw emotional reactions and glowing tributes from within and outside the ancient coastal town.
Reacting to the sad development, Hon Whingan said the late Akran was a generational king whose reign was marked by wisdom, calm authority and an unwavering commitment to peace, tradition and development. According to him, the monarch was not only the paramount ruler of Badagry but also a respected statesman whose counsel and leadership resonated far beyond the shores of the town.
The lawmaker noted that with the transition of the Akran, Badagry has lost a father and custodian of its rich heritage, Lagos State has lost a stabilising and unifying voice within its traditional institution, and Nigeria has lost a rare bridge between culture and modern governance.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the Akran in Council, traditional chiefs and the entire people of Badagry, praying for divine strength, comfort and fortitude as the kingdom comes to terms with the painful loss.
Hon Whingan assured the people of Badagry that the enduring legacy of the late monarch, built on service, dignity and unity, would continue to inspire present and future generations, even as the ancient town prepares to bid farewell to one of its most distinguished sons.
As mourning continues, tributes keep pouring in for a king widely regarded as a moral compass, cultural icon and symbol of continuity whose influence will remain firmly etched in the history of Badagry.
