Àhọ́lú Akran’s Death: Sanwo-Olu Warns Badagry Chiefs Against Power Play in Succession

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued a firm warning to the Badagry royal council, urging traditional chiefs to resist any attempt to manipulate the succession process following the death of the Akran of Badagry, Oba Aholu Menu Toyi I.

The revered monarch passed away on Monday, January 12, after a brief illness at his palace in Badagry, leaving behind a deep sense of loss across the ancient town.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the Akran’s family and the royal council on Thursday, Governor Sanwo-Olu stressed the need for fairness, unity and transparency in the selection of the next Akran. The governor was represented by the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Bolaji Robert.

He cautioned that the succession process must not be tainted by personal interests or division, noting that Badagry’s long-standing history and peace must be preserved.

He appealed to the chiefs and residents to see themselves as one people and to protect the unity of the town, adding that Badagry must not be allowed to descend into crisis at such a sensitive time. He assured the community of the state government’s support as they navigate the transition.

The governor acknowledged that the death of the Akran had created a major vacuum but reminded the community that life must go on and peace must be sustained.

Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Babatunde Hunpe, echoed the governor’s message, urging all stakeholders to abide strictly by the advice and directives from the state government. He pledged the council’s commitment to maintaining peace and order throughout the succession period.

On behalf of the royal family, the eldest daughter of the late monarch, Adesola Akran-Oketunde, expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu and his delegation for the condolence visit. She appealed for continued support for the family and for sustained efforts to keep Badagry and Lagos State peaceful.

As Badagry mourns its departed king, all eyes are now on the royal council, with strong calls for a transparent and conflict-free process to choose the next custodian of the ancient throne.
