General Christopher Musa has officially taken over as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence. President Bola Tinubu administered the oath of office on Thursday at the State House in Abuja, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the former Chief of Defence Staff.
His appointment came after the Senate spent about five hours grilling him during his confirmation hearing on Wednesday. Lawmakers questioned him extensively about recent security failures, including the controversial withdrawal of soldiers from Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, just before schoolgirls were abducted on November 17.
Musa told the senators that one of his first actions as minister would be to launch a thorough investigation into that withdrawal. He also promised to look into the killing of Brigade Commander Brig Gen Musa Uba in Borno State and other attacks targeting senior military officers.
His nomination followed the resignation of the former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, who reportedly stepped down due to health concerns.
